The latest decision of Doordarshan to telecast a 15 minute Sanskrit news bulletin on its Tamil Channel DD Podhigai, as expected, evoked “rhetoric” objection form DMK and a few fringe groups in Tamil Nadu. They term it “imposition of Sanskrit”. They also ask, “who knows Sanskrit in Tamilnadu?”
A public broadcaster adding a news bulletin in Sanskrit to one of its channels’ programme list is “imposition of Sanskrit” for them! It is nothing but ridiculous. They want to know “who knows Sanskrit in Tamilnadu”. They should know that Tamils are never the frogs in the well like them.
The counter blast is, “who does NOT know Sanskrit in Tamilnadu?” A considerable percentage of Sanskrit words are in popular usage by Tamils; who do not even recognise that those are Sanskrit words! Here is an ABCD of it: Avasiyam / Bhayam / Chanchalam / Dairyam!
The ruckus evoked a curiosity about Sanskrit. Let us know more about it:
Sanskrit
– is one of the scheduled languages in our Constitution
– is one of the languages that news bulletins on DD/AIR for long (on AIR since 1974 and on DD since 2016).
– is the most ancient, perfect
– is mother of many languages
– is the storehouse of knowledge and so the most invaluable treasure of the world which views it as is the “precious” gift of India.
– is the true symbol of Bharatiya culture, tradition and thought.
– is best suited for computer programming and Artificial Intelligence.
– is compulsory in UK’s primary classes, reason being “ many European languages do not use many parts of tongue and mouth while speaking and many finger movements while writing”. (The sounds of alphabets are comprehensive in their range and broadens the language skills of the child in early stages).
– is taught in 14 universities across Germany
– has the most complete and systemized grammar among all classical languages.
In fact, DMK and other parties/groups that oppose Hindi and Sanskrit are “hypocrites”, They only oppose for opposing sake. Their family members, kith/kin study these languages and also manage CBSE schools that teach both Sanskrit and Hindi.
Will DMK chief M.K. Stalin and fellow bashers of Sanskrit and Hindi face the reality and be objective in their approach? It high time they realise learning more languages will not harm the mother tongue. In fact their hatred of Hindi and Sanskrit have never helped in promoting Tamil language.
