A 14 year old girl, Jeyashree while managing her father’s petty shop, was home alone. Two functionaries of a renowned political party, bound-doused her in inflammable liquid before setting her ablaze. Having heard her cries the neighbours came to her rescue, admitted her in the Government Hospital with severe burns. She succumbed to the injuries on May 11 but her dying declaration went viral on social media. Based on her statement, the culprit duo were arrested with immediate effect.
The reason behind this gruesome killing has turned out to be pre-existing land dispute between the girl’s father, his brother and the neighbour Murugan who had a hand in the killing. In 2013, the girl’s uncle’s hand was chopped in a similar dispute over the property issue and the case is still under trial. On May 10, Murugan’s friend who came to buy cigarette, had an ensuing argument with the girl’s brother, wherein he sustained injuries. He went ahead and lodged a complaint with the police. On hearing the complaint being lodged Murugan and his close associate the local branch secretary of the said party K. Kaliaperumal, went ahead with this heinous act. Promptly, Chief Minister E. Palanisami, cancelled their party membership and expelled them from the party.
This barbarous act was condemned by many political leaders. But two people, Thirumaavalavan, MP Chidambaram, Sri D. Ravikumar, MP Villupuram, have sought to give a Dalits-Other Hindus angle to this act to suit their own political purposes. The fact of the matter is, both the parties to the disputed land issue, belong to the same community.
Critics are of the opinion that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla should be posted with this uncivil activity of members of Lok Sabha. This is not new, in the recent past too Thirumaavalavan, was pulled up for hate speeches, towards Hindu temples and Gods disrupting harmony in the society.
