Saner voices warn Government; “Hands off Ram Setu!”
On one of the rare occasions a senior functionary in the Government, the Solicitor General Mohan Parasaran in his case has refused to appear for the Government in the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project case on grounds of conscience. “I have faith that Lord Rama exists and he used this bridge,” Mohan Parasaran declared and refused to be party to destruction of Rama Setu.
Meanwhile Dr. S.Kalyanaraman in his statement from Chennai observes: “Environmentalists and marine biologists are aghast at the stand taken by the Centre before the Supreme Court that it wished to go ahead with the Sethudamudram Ship Channel Project (SSCP) in the original form, thereby rejecting the RK Pachauri Committee report that had recommended an alternative alignment since the proposed channel through the eco-sensitive Rama Setu (Adam’s Bridge) was not feasible economically and ecologically. For the Government of India to now reject it owns committee’s report makes a mockery of the rule of law in this country.”
Hindus make way for erroneous administration
Villagers belonging to half a dozen hamlets near Kothankulam in Ramanathapuram district have hit the road in protest against the proposal to demolish 640 years old Vishnu temple while laying a six lane highway along the eastern coast. The presiding deity of the temple is Sundararaja Perumal. The temple is owned by a Vaishnavite Matam namely Sri Vanamaamalai Matam. While this happens in the Southern part of Tamilnadu, a similar attack on Hindu society occurs in the Northern district of Chengalpat, at Thirukazhukundram, to be precise. When the Ganesh Visarjan was in progress, accompanied by the traditional Mangala Vaidyam, a group of persons objected to the music when the procession was about to cross a mosque on the way. The police arrived in strength. A ban was imposed on music for a 100 meter stretch along the road. So the procession converted itself into a silent procession. Sharp comments on the police action pointed to court verdicts allowing music before mosques. But the Hindus chose to be silent that day.
Good News from Sri Lanka
During the 150th year celebrations of Swami Vivekananda, here is some good news from Sri Lanka. Sri Wigneswaran of Tamil National Alliance, who will be the Chief Minister of Northern Provincial Council soon, a member of Celebration Committee of Swami Vivekananda. In the first regional elections in the island of Sri Lanka, his Tamil National Alliance (TNA) swept all five districts of Northern Provincial Council. The TNA bagged 30 out of a total of 38 seats. Sri Sampanthan, President of TNA, reiterated TNA’s commitment to the evolution of a political solution within the framework of a united undivided country. That being the ground reality, jarring voices in Tamilnadu parroted that the election outcome is a victory for separate ‘Tamil Eelam’ demand.
