The fight against corona was seen today as religion taking the place of political activity in Tamilnadu. Virudunagar (south) district DMK secretary and Aruppukottai MLA KKSSR Ramachandran in a telephonic talk, a few days back, with Tamil Nadu Thouheed Jamat (TNTJ) secretary claimed credit for stopping TN govt officials and TN health dept officials from screening for corona virus in entire Sattur constituency and sealing of the street where TNTJ secretary resides. This audio clip went viral on social media. TN govt has, as in the past, would release 5,450 metric tons of rice to 2,895 Mosques free of cost for preparing “Gruel” (Kanji) during Ramazan. This rice in turn to be distributed via Mosques to the deserving houses, since community breaking of fast Iftar has been banned during the total lockdown. This act of TN govt at this juncture is viewed as minority appeasement, since the elections to TN assembly is hardly 10 months away. Some in Muslim community say that the Tablighi Jamaat is just an entity and does not represent the community. But in reality, the law-breaking TJ are supported and shielded by the community. Recently eight Indonesian attendees of Markaz congregation were arrested by TN police. The arrest was condemned by IUML leader and Ramanathapuram MP. Jawahirullah of Tamil Nadu Manithaneya Makkal Katchi said he would take the responsibility of fighting the case. These foreigners have violated the Visa rules and overstayed, most them corona virus infected.
