Three decades of a fight for the ‘Right of Way’ of Hindus
It is a wave of Vinayakas in Tamilnadu, last week. In over 50,000 places huge Ganesha statues were installed in public and worshipped for ten days. Following that they were immersed in the nearest sea, river or lake. Of course, Hindu Munnani began this social revolution. But several other outfits and groups of Ganesha devotees have taken it up to give it the shape of a festival encompassing the entire society as years go by. Tirupur a district place witnessed 700 Ganeshas being installed and immersed. Over 100 people were arrested for trying to take out Ganesha immersion processions. Also, Sri Rama Gopalan of Hindu Munnani was also arrested when he tried to go in a procession carrying a Ganesha idol in a ‘sensitive’ route in Chennai, where 1400 Ganeshas were installed and immersed this year. Hindus make a secular Government throw out atheists from temples
Public awareness and pressure definitely makes the Government behave properly, as in the case of a HR and CE circular. The circular bans permission to hold meetings by groups like DK which profess atheism in halls and mandapams owned by Hindu temples. This circular comes in the wake of a DK programme that was held inside a kalyana mandapam attached to a village Shiva temple near Tiruvarur, in Thanjavur District. A group of Shiva devotees petitioned against this incident saying atheists’ propaganda has no place inside a Hindu temple; as a result, the HR and CE which administers the temple in question came out with a circular No.8511/2013/A1/dated 23.8.2013, banning atheist programmes as well as serving liquor and non-vegetarian in programmes inside temples. This had a salutary effect. The police themselves informed the HR and CE when non-vegetarian items were served in a marriage feast held inside a temple at another town.
It is a comeback for Lord Vishwakarma
In the bazaars of Tamilnadu towns’ pictures of Vishwakarma used to be sold along with pictures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses in ‘photo frame’ shops. This is because ‘Vishwakarma’ is held as the kula Guru of five different communities of artisans like Goldsmiths, Carpenters, blacksmiths, coppersmiths and sculptors. With the emergence of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) as the No.1 trade union confederation in the country, Vishwakarma Jayanthi (September 17) has been adopted all over the country as the ‘National Labour Day’. Unions affiliated to BMS in Tamilnadu began celebrating ‘Vishwakarma Jayanthi’ the emergence of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) as the No.1 trade union confederation in the country, Vishwakarma Jayanthi (September 17) has been adopted all over the country as the ‘National Labour Day’. Unions affiliated to BMS in Tamilnadu began celebrating ‘Vishwakarma Jayanthi’ thus reminding all sections of people of the dignity of labour enshrined in our culture. So, for Tamilnadu it is a comeback by Lord Vishwakarma.
