Till Date They Travel By Bullock
Cart To Their  Kula Devata Temple.
Hundreds of families living in 56
villages around Kamudhi town in Ramanathapuram district travel 80 kilometres en
masse once in a year to a Shiva temple in adjoining Virudhunagar district,
because it is their Kula Devata. They all belong to a single community. The
significant part is that till date they use only bullock cart for this trip.
They rent 500 bullock carts, paying Rs. 9,000 for each cart. They also shell
out Rs 100 per bull as fodder cost.  If a family fails to find a cart, it
rents a tractor to make good the trip.  The temple is administered by the
Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Board of the state government. But
the temple officials hand over the temple to the Kamudhi families on all here
days of the Kula Devata pooja. This year the pooja was conducted last week.
Seminary Head In Sex Scandal:
Crass Anarchy Beneath The Cross
M. Gnanavaram (58), Principal of
the Tamil Nadu Theological Seminary, Madurai, has been accused of  sexual
harassment of a tribal woman research scholar from Manipur. He was her guide.
Earlier, in April this year, a section of the faculty of the seminary had
approached the Madurai district collector Anshul Mishra demanding a probe into
the allegations of sexual harassment, misappropriation of funds and nepotism
against the principal. Gnanavaram had also withheld a UGC scholarship to the
tune of Rs 6.5 lakh due to her as she did not comply with his demands. The
woman had joined the seminary to pursue her doctoral studies in 2008. The
faculty had alleged that there were a large number of sexual harassment
incidents in the past three years, but they were not reported. Following this,
the collector ordered the police to investigate the allegations against the
principal. The FIR was finally filed in the presence of the woman on May 28.
The report said a case was registered under the provisions of SC/ST Act and
Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act (Based on a report in
NAGALAND POST!) .
Surendar of Theni and Vigyan
Bharati
The name ‘Vigyan Bharati’
suddenly caught the imagination of residents of Theni, a far flung place in a
hill area down south. Reason: A schoolboy of this town has won the second prize
in this year’s all India competition for school children on topic science held
in Indore recently. Surendar, the boy, studying in the NSKB High School in the
town, received the prize amount of Rs 21,000 and a certificate. VB karyakartha
says he formed part of a contingent of 21 successful candidates in the state
level contest from Tamilnadu. Needless to say, dignitaries of Surendar’s school
and town made a beeline to his house to congratulate him. Of course, such
honour is not quite new to Surendar; he had won in a Young Scientist contest
held earlier by an engineering college nearby.
