Initial Report of Landslide Devastation in Darjeeling District :
As per the
initial report collected from various news agencies and local Swayamsevaks, a
series of landslides triggered by overnight heavy rain impacted severely in
West Bengal’s Darjeeling district on Wednesday, 1st July 2015. The death toll has gone up to ~38,
leaving over ~23 people missing and ~500 misplaced.The landslide happened at~25 places in Darjeeling district, at “Kalimpong”
and “Kurseong” sub-divisions. It washed away portions of highways, including a
bridge caused extensive damage to NH-10,NH-31A and NH-55, cutting off road links
to the region.

“Mirik” block of “Kurseong” sub-division is badly affected.At
least ~29 people were died, many are missing and many houses are razed to the grounds and washed away by the cascading flow of heavy
downpour and mud and. In “Timling” Tea Garden
(LimbuBasti) alone at least ~19 people were killed after their houses were
swept away by the landslides.Similarly in many other villages such as “Virgram”,“Gopaldhara”,“Nagri”,“Teeok”,
“Sourin” etc. most of the houses were washed away, along with their cattle’s and
leaving them helpless. ~300 families of this area has taken shelter in 7 Government
shelter houses.

village of Kalimpong block-1 is completely washed away by the landslide.

Union minister of
state for home Sri Kiren Rijiju accompanied by Darjeeling MP Sri S.S.Ahaluwalia
and West Bengal chief minister Sushree Mamata Banerjee visited some
landslide-affected areas of the region on Thursday and consoled the victim
families.

Many Swayamsevaks has been involved in the rescue operation from
the day one locally. They are also reaching out the people of impacted areas nearby.
RSS Siliguri along with Sewa Bharati, Uttarbanga team has visited “Mirik” with
relief materials and taking the stock of the current situation.

rehabilitation is needed for the people of the devastated area.
