A get-together of VES (Vivekananda Educational Society)
family was held on 8th January 2013 in Chennai to commemorate their
40 years of establishment.  Sri
N.Gopalaswami, Former Chief Election Commissioner and President, VES presided
over the function.

Sri S.Gurumurthy, Columnist and Vice President, VES in his
address highlighted and compared the progress of India and the downfall of
America.  He said India could progress
because of certain value systems and strong family ties.  America progressed by mortgaging the value
systems and family and hence had to pay the price. He referred the document
‘World in 2030’, brought out by the US National Intelligence Council which states
that America, China and India will be the leading economic powers in 2030. He
wondered why after Independence India could not produce giants like Swami
Vivekananda, Aurabindo etc.  Our
educational system should change considerably for producing giants who can lead
the country.

Sri K.Suryanarayana Rao, Chairman, Samskrith Bharati Trust,
humbly accepting the praises showered on him said that he was just an
instrument deriving inspiration from RSS. He highlighted about how VES was
started, for what purpose and those who were responsible for it. Quoting Swami
Vivekananda that one should feel proud to call himself Hindu and proud of his
ancestry and as and when one feels ashamed to call himself Hindu that is
death.  He wanted the students who are
going abroad to be cultural ambassadors.

Sri N.Gopalaswami in his address referred what Sri
S.Gurumurthy said about India being one among the three major economic powers
by 2030 and said that for India to reach that state there should be radical
change in the educational system and think-tank.  He referred to the comments at the time of IT
boom in India when the IT professionals were referred as ‘Techno coolies’.

Swami Mitrananda Maharaj, Director, All India Chinmaya Yuva
Kendra, narrated two stories told by Swami Chinmayananda and said that if a
person has to change, his thoughts have to be changed and education has to play
a major role in giving both secular and spiritual education.  He further added that we should do our work
with total faith for achieving the desired results.
Swami Vimurtananda Maharaj, Editor, Sri Ramakrishna Vijayam,
a magazine of Sri Ramakrishna Mutt, wanted four types of students to be brought
out by VES schools viz., strong culturally, physically, intellectually and
spiritually.

A monthly calendar was released on the occasion containing the
hand-drawing of Swami Vivekananda’s photos drawn by the students of Vyasarpadi
VES School
. Sri Chakravarti, Secretary, VES welcomed the
gathering and informed about the progress made by VES (which is now running 20
schools in and around Chennai) during the last forty years.
A dance drama by Smt Ramani of Kanchi Kamakoti Natyalaya of Ambattur and bhajans by Ambattur Vivekananda Vidyalaya were part of the programme. Floral tributes were attributed to Swami Vivekananda by the participants of the programme.
