The announcement by the State Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisami that his Government would consider releasing prisoners serving life sentence in jails for more than 10 years (to mark the close of MGR centenary that falls on January 17).
It points to ominous consequences. The reason for this is the quarters from which such a demand emanates. On January 2, Thirumavalavan, leader of a Dalit political party, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), backed by Jihadi outfits that emerged from SIMI and Al Umma, met the state Chief Minister and appealed to him to release not only the prisoners serving life sentence who are in jail for more than 10 years but also all those who are in jails for long periods. The same day an MLA,Thamimun Ansari, met the CM in the same context. Muslims form just less than 6 percent in the state’s population as per 2011 census but the percentage of Muslims in the incarcerated population in Tamilnadu is almost three times the percentage of Muslims in the overall population, according to the 2015 National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report. Going by the recent crime history of the state, it would be worth mentioning that most of the Muslim prisoners are booked under anti terror acts or Arms Act and indiscriminate release of such categories of prisoners would be detrimental to the ongoing investigation by agencies like the CBI into decades old terror incidents. This is vindicated by the arrest of one Mushtaq Ahmed in Chennai by CBI on January 5. A key accused in the 1993 Chennai RSS karyalaya bomb blast case, Mushtaq was absconding for the last 24 years. (A total of 11 RSS workers were killed by using RDX which brought down the multi-storeyed RSS building on August 8, 1993).

Sort of a silent social revolution in Panruti
Tamilnadu is witness to occasional acts of indecency like cutting the tuft or the sacred thread of the devout by hooligans masquerading as atheists belonging to some splinter group of the DK. Last week, just a heartening opposite happened in Panruti town of Villupuram district. Over 175 grama kovil poojaris (who conduct worship in tiny village temples) were benefitted by a two day pooja prashikshanam camp on December 27 and 28. Many of them were invested with sacred thread at the start of the camp. They included poojaries from the SC / ST sections of society. Shri Guru. Subramaniam, state in – charge of Samajik Samarasata work of RSS, led a team that organised the camp jointly with the Hindu Samudaya Anmika Trust. Subramaniam said that the poojaries assured that they would thwart conversion in their villages by creating awareness among the devotees. Swami Ramananda of Thiruvannamalai and Swami Raghuveerananda of Rishikesh blessed the trainees.
How Tamil Hindus brought the high and mighty to their knees
Venue: Tirumalai-Tirupati Devasthana Mandapam in Rajapalayam, Virudunagar district; Date: January 7. Speaker : Popular Film lyricist poet Vairamuthu. Organisers: ‘Dinamani’ Tamil daily of the The New Indian Express group. Topic of the poet’s speech: Andal, an Avatar of Maha Lakshmi, who rose to be the consort of Maha Vishnu; she is the only woman saint of the venerated 12 Vaishnavite Alwars. Her contribution to spiritual Tamil scripture is unparalleled. Something ugly happened in dire contrast to the nature of the venue and the announced topic: The entire devout audience of Rajapalayam were shell shocked when Vairamuthu wound up his speech by quoting an Indiana University, USA publication that had described holy mother Andal as a deva dasi trying to cast aspersions on the character of Andal (now it has transpired that the book was the handy work of a Shimla based outfit). They were not alone. Enraged internet Hindus bayed for the blood of the vilifiers of the Hindu saint. Hindu organisations including Hindu Munnani as well as hindu seers hit the road by holding protest demonstrations demanding unconditional apology by Vairamuthu and ‘Dinamani’for their shameless act of blasphemy. In a first, two popular political leaders of Tamilnadu (Dr.S. Ramadas and G.K. Vasan) have come out with forthright condemnation for the Vairamuthu insinuation of the Hindu Saint Andal. BJP too has demanded an apology from the poet and the Editor of the daily.
