Tough times ahead for Karunanidhi’s daughter
The Supreme Court is likely to hear on Jan 21, 2014 DMK leader Kanimozhi’s (daughter of Karunanidhi) plea seeking the quashing of charges against her in the 2G case being exclusively heard by a special CBI court. The hearing may throw up some surprises going by last week’s statement by Mohan Parasaran, Solicitor General of India, that flied in the face of the Attorney Generals’ June 2013 opinion on filing a money-laundering case on the 200 crore transfer to Kalaignar TV owned by Kanimozhi family.
The Enforcement Directorate may file a chargesheet.
Chennai, counterfeit hub?
For the past couple of years, Chennai has acquired the dubious distinction of ‘hub of counterfeit currency distribution’. This information is based on the records with National Crime Records Bureau. As though to prove this, a series of arrests by city police occurred. The police arrested a duo – Hussain (21) and Mohammed Ali (20) when they tried to exchange the counterfeit notes in 1000 rupee denomination on January 4, 2014. One Sadaam Hussain of Assam had supplied them the counterfeit notes with face value of 2.74 lakh. Sadaam Hussain, in turn, was receiving counterfeit notes from one Abdul Razak Khan of Uttar Pradesh. In another incident, the city police arrested Mohammed Feroz, a mobile phone shop keeper of Kodambakkam, while trying to exchange counterfeit notes of such high quality that even under an ultraviolet light the fake note could not be found out. In yet another part of Chennai, the patrol police arrested one Mohammed Koya on suspicion and found out that he was in possession of counterfeit note with face value of Rs.88,000/- One Abdul Nazar was arrested by sleuths of Revenue Intelligence Directorate at the airport when Nazar landed from a flight from Colombo. Popular tamil dailies published several articles last week exposing the role of Pakistan in this counterfeit offence.
A broom needed to clean TN unit of AAP
Aam Aadmi Party is in for deep trouble in Tamilnadu. The State AAP convener Christina Samy is alleged to have amassed wealth running into crores misusing the AAP name. Also, she chucked her detractors from the party who in turn exposed her misdoings. Clearly, a broom is required to clean the AAP itself. The AAP earned some negative points when Prashant Bhushan of AAP visited the controversial leader SP Udayakumar, of anti-nuclear campaigner based in Koodankulam, this part where a nuclear power plant had just now started functioning. Incidentally, Udayakumar is under the Home Ministry radar for foreign fund misuse.
