High Court hints at common civil code
The marriage of a 16-year-old girl, daughter of Syed Abuthakir of Maharajapuram village in Virudhunagar district, was stopped by Government officials. Contesting this, advocate M Mohamed Abbas filed a PIL seeking a direction to the State Government officials to desist from interfering with marriage of Muslim girls. In a landmark ruling pronounced on March 4, 2015, the Madras High Court stated that Muslims cannot rely upon their personal law to claim a right to give minor girls in marriage immediately after they attain puberty. Justice C T Selvam had disallowed marriage of a Minor Muslim girl, saying, “This court cannot, and would not, pass an order by virtue of which little girls become child brides.
The heros and heroines of Tamilnadu hit national headlines
The determined stand of Hindus of Tamilnadu found an appreciative note in the Sarkaryavah report at the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha of RSS held in Nagpur on 13, 14, and 15 March 2015. Sarkaryavah ji noted “This year marks the completion of 1000 years of the Coronation of Raja Rajendra Chola. On this occasion various programmes were organized in different localities. The Karyakartas of Tamilnadu planned to conduct route marches in all the district centers on 9 November 2014. Due to political pressures the administration denied permission. The issue was taken to court. The court gave the decision in favour of the sangh stating that prohibition of route march is incorrect. But the administration was obstinate. Still the karyakartas decided to conduct the route march as planned. Men and women from the city participated in the route march at the district centers. 35000 brothers and sisters were arrested. This programme revealed unprecedented energy and determination”.
Hail Tamil, says RSS
Entire Tamilnadu knows that ‘missile man’ and former President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam studied in his mother tongue Tamil. It is history now that he reached great heights. People in Tamilnadu are reminded of this when they read reports of the RSS resolution emphasing the need for education in Mother tongue. The particular portion of the resolution says: “The Pratinidhi Sabha is its considered opinion that for natural learning and to enrich cultural moorings, the education, and particularly elementary education should be in mother language or in state languages recognized in our Constitution…. Parents should have a firm resolve to impart elementary education to their children in their own language”. This way, RSS is sure to find quite a positive response in this state habituated to approach every problem with a linguistic overtone.
