Include ‘Silambam’ in Olympics, National Sports Day celebrated in chennai

Commemorating Dhyan Chand, annual ‘National Sports Day’, was organized by Kreeda Bharati in Chennai. Around 300 men, women and children participated in the day long State level competitions. Traditional sports like Pallankuzhi, Paramapatham, Mallar Kambham, Silambam, Pachcha Kuthirai etc were played. In the evening, traditional sports were demonstrated for the guests. Shri Anbarasan, Ph.d in Games, Asst Professor in YMCA College felt happy in participating the event. Remembering the great motivator and Hockey Player Dhyan Chand (in whose name the National Sports Day was celebrated), narrated how Dhyan Chand became an outstanding player. Citing anecdotes, he highlighted that Pranayama is the base for all sports. He further appealed that ‘Silambam’ the traditional sport of Tamilnadu should be included in Olympics.

Shri Thirumugam,Vice President, Kreeda Bharati citing Subramanya Bharati’s poem who appealed children to play all evening (maalai muzhuvathum vilayaatu) said that in future Rajamata Jijabai’s Puraskar will be awarded to the outstanding sports person. Look Back at experience; Look forward you will find your future; Look around and: Look within and find yourself should be the mantra, he said.

Shri U Sundar, (RSS) Organiser of Vidya Bharati said, “in a 123 crore populated country we could find only few in Olympics this year. This should change. Through games, nationalism can be invoked. Sports should be clean and be away from match-fixing, drugs, politics etc. Through sports, skills and good characters can be developed”.
Shri V K Mohanarangan, Apna Industries distributed the prize to the participants. Shri M Thirunavukarasu, Vice President Kreeda Bharati accommodated the chief guest. Shri Narendra, Correspondent of NKVV School appealed for more participation in sports and revive traditional games. Shri Baskar, Joint Secretary, Kreeda Bharati welcomed the gathering. Shri Jagathalaprathaban, Secretary Kreeda Bharati rendered vote of thanks.Shri Ramachandran co-ordinated the event.
