Japani Park Delhi was a congregation of leading saints, NGOs, Vanvasi
Raksha Pariwar, VHP, RSS Office Bearer, with about forty thousand people, who
cheered the spirit of Kumbh amidst a feeling of gaiety and excitement, on
Sunday, December 21, 2014- the coldest day of Delgi in the last 15 years.

The occasion was of the Vanvasi Raksha Pariwar Kumbha 2014 which was
presided over by P. P. Sarsanghchalak Dr. Mohan Rao Bhagwatji and was a
celebration of the Vanvasi spirit and unity, and an attempt to breach the gap
between what we call urban and developed with the primitive tribals.

The event began with the inauguration of the Kumbh Exhibition by the
International General Secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad Shri Champat Rai who
was very much hopeful that the confluence of the unique heritage, ethnic
diversity, rich natural resources, socio-cultural traditions projected in the
exhibition would certainly motivate and help in mobilising city folks to come
and support the cause of the tribals.

In lieu of this exhibition, the audience was mesmerised with an
impressive and inspiring performance of Mahishasur Mardani by Tribal Artists
form West Bengal while the children of Bhatnagar International School
captivated the audience with the group dance performance.

Shri Ashok Singhal, Patron, Vishwa Hindu Parishad talked of the
Vanvasis of Bharat in terms of population statistics. A large part of the
country’s population lives in the forests. Out of the grand 125 crores
population, 18 crores are vanvasis who live in isolated, deep forests and
villages. He was eloquent on the plight of the Vanvasis who form a significant
portion of the Bharatn society but remain ignored and are thus, pushed towards
the missionaries who convert them to Christianity forcing a severing of
traditional ties with their ancestral cultural roots. He attacked the
missionaries who convert the Vanvasis in the name of helping and aiding and
uplifting their socio-economic status. He even mentioned a report of a
prominent journalist who described how the Native Tribals of Africa, though
illiterate in terms of the missionaries, had power and land. But by the time,
the Missionaries left Africa, all the natives had Bible in their hands and all
the missionaries had complete control over the lands. He defined the problem of
this manipulative religious conversion at the global level as is seen in
Australia, Africa and South America which have a high concentration of Native
Tribals.

wrenching talk on the historical importance of the Vanvasis, right from the
Vedic Age. For fourteen years, Lord Rama was in exile in the forests and his
episodes with Shabari and Kevat are enough proof of the Vanvasi instinct of
survival, protection and faith in God. On his question of who would have
protected Goddess Sita in the forests when she was exiled from the royal castle
of Ayodhya, if not for a Vanvasi, Maharishi Valmiki, the entire audience was
sobbing and many a sighs could be heard across the sentimental gathering.

Vanvasis with their element of mystery, primitivity and ecstasy are
viewed more with a skeptical outlook than with sympathy. It is this viewpoint
that needs to be reversed, and it is with this mission that the Vanvasi Raksha
Pariwar Kumbh 2014 was organised.
