Occasions come and go. Always there is a scope for falling back upon the noble guidance of our seers and sages on such occasions. This holds good for friendship day which falls today.
Today is International Friendship Day. Our sages have stood in bringing harmony blending appropriately with the great cultural heritage and tradition of Bharat. One such example is: His Holiness Kanchi Paramacharya Shri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Swamy, and unique advaita, composed a song ‘Maitreem Bhajatha …’ The song was sung by none other than ‘Lady Queen of Carnatic Music’ Smt M S Subbulakshmi on the occasion of the UN day on October 23, 1966. This song cheered the audience with applause taking the pride moment of our nation.

Maithreem Bhajatha , Akhila Hrujjethreem,

Atmavadeva paraanapi pashyatha

Yuddham thyajatha , Spardhaam Tyajata ,

thyajatha Pareshu akramamaakramanam
Jananee Pruthivee Kaamadughaastey

JanakO Devah Sakala Dayaaluh

Daamyata Datta Dayadhvam Janathaah

Sreyo Bhooyaath Sakala Janaanaam

English translation:

With friendship please serve,
And conquer all the hearts,
Please think that others are like you,
Please forsake war for ever,
Please forsake competition for ever,
Please forsake force to get,
Someone else’s property,
For Mother Earth yields all our desires,
And God our father is most merciful,
Restrain, donate and be kind,
To all the people of this world.
Let all the people, live with bliss,
Let all the people live with bliss,
Let all the people live with bliss
